DOD SCOUTS INNOVATIVE IDEAS FROM INDUSTRY: The DoD is focusing on a number of initiatives to work with industry and coalition partners with the aim of discovering new and innovative warfighting capabilities. Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Heidi Shyu says that small companies are and will be playing a critical role in the endeavor, and the new Office of Strategic Capital will assist in funding companies developing technologies critical to national security. NDAA COMPROMISE BOOSTS MILITARY BUDGET: Congress has unveiled plans for a compromise of the defense authorization bill that would boost the military budget by 8% over fiscal 2022 levels. The $858 billion plan includes $817 billion in DoD spending, and comes as the US aims to bolster munitions production and lessen the supply chain’s reliance on China. US FACES PIVOTAL YEARS IN COUNTERING CHINA: Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum this past week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that the US is at a pivotal point with China and will need military strength to ensure America sets global norms for the rest of the century.
