US EFFORT TO ARM TAIWAN FACES NEW CHALLENGE: The conflict in Ukraine is exacerbating a nearly $19 billion backlog of weapons bound for Taiwan, running up against the longer-term demands of a US strategy to arm Taiwan to defend itself against a possible invasion by China. The major defense primes are still struggling with supply-chain disruptions, and the backlog highlights the challenges the American industrial base faces in producing enough armaments to protect the US and its allies. DIA FORMS CHINA MISSION GROUP: The Defense Intelligence Agency is forming a China Mission Group to monitor competition with China and plans to move resources including people, communications, and technology to the Pacific region. UKRAINE WAR SPURS VALUE ARMS PRODUCTION: The world’s biggest defense companies are scaling up production of cheaper and faster systems and munitions to meet the sustained demand triggered by the war in Ukraine.
